Well, rice wasn’t made of gold, to be honest. But the steaming rice was garnished with golden leaves. Gold and silver leaves may be common on desserts and other assortments, this is possibly the first time it has been tried on rice. The video and photos are going viral on the social media platform.
The dish was made by V Sai Radha Krishna, a Hyderabad-based caterer. He says that he decided to serve the guests gold because his client asked him to do something different. “It is not new to have gold. People have been eating sweets wrapped in gold leaf and silver leaf. I tried the same with rice. I knew that gold leaf will melt on hot steamed rice. I just tried it, and it worked well,” Sai said.
The leaves on the rice were made from 24-carat gold. Inspired by the city’s famous gold-laden paan (betel leaf), the caterer decided to try it on rice. He hadn’t made any special effort to buy these gold leaves. “They are commonly available in Hyderabad, and cost only 300 rupees per leaf” he said.
Though the footage is from 2016, it is going viral now. Sai says that he operates as per the client’s wish, and will love to do the same again.
