Gone, but not forgotten, at least not here in Kingston. Diana is still being remembered as “The People’s Princess” by Kingston’s residents.
This Thursday has marked 2 decades since Diana died in a car accident in Paris, triggering a flood of public grief. Princess Diana visited Kingston in October 1991. She and Prince Charles were in the town to help commemorate the 150th anniversary of Queen’s University.
Former Kingston Mayor, Helen Cooper said, “She was a very, very beautiful woman but she was just delightfully unassuming and charming and not in a smarmy way”. On 28th October, Cooper officially welcomed the Royal couple to the town.
Cooper said, “I was just like somebody in the crowd. I was much more interested in observing them than I was at anything else”.
As Princess of Wales, Diana was the chief of a Kingston-based regiment, a role she took very seriously. When looking back at Princess Diana’s visit to Kingston, Cooper said, “Whenever will we get an experience like that again?”.
