In one-of-it’s-kind decision, court has granted ownership of express train, Swarna Shatabdi Express to Sampuran Singh. People often get compensated for the wrongs done to them, but this way of compensating is really baffling. The Indian Railway had taken over land of this Katana village farmer to build new tracks of a Ludhiana-Chandigarh railway line a few years back. The farmer alleged that the railway has underpaid him for his piece of land and he was pursuing them for monetary compensation since the last 10 years. He finally went to court in 2015. He won the case there but the railways refused to pay him and then he was forced to file another plea in January.
On March 17, the state court awarded him ownership of the train running daily between Delhi and Amritsar in lieu of the total amount of Rs 10 million that the railways owed him. It’s not all; he is also the owner of the station master’s office in Ludhiana, a place from where this train passes. It was Judge Jaspal Verma who had given this verdict.
His lawyer said, “We were tired of pleading with the railways to clear the pending dues. The court asked us to identify properties for recovering our money.”
The Railways have however taken an interim court order that gives them back the control of the train till the case is heard again. The lawyer said that if they fail to give the amount by Saturday, then the court can also sanction the auction of the 20-coach express train.
