Flipkart has hired senior Google executive Mayur Datar as principal data scientist in a bid to strengthen its core leadership team, particularly the advertising business, at India’s largest online marketplace. Â Datar, who holds a doctorate degree in computer science from Stanford University, will join Flipkart next month, the company said. He will report to chief technology officer Peeyush Ranjan, who had also joined Flipkart from Google earlier this year.
“Data is the future for Flipkart,” “We are looking at solving various problems including personalisation, ads as well as planning and forecasting,” he added. At Google, Datar led various projects including keyword suggestion tool for advertisers, Google Adwords Broad Matching, Google news personalisation and AdSense targeting for social networks.
Over the past few quarters, Flipkart has made several strategic hires including former Google product head Punit Soni, who was brought in to head the product division at the e-commerce platform. “Most e-commerce companies are looking to hire people who have expertise in scaling operations, product, data mining and machine learning,” said Harish Kumar, founder of head hunting firm Wenger & Watson.
