Duronto Express derailed near Asangaon in Maharashtra. Reports say that the accident took place around 8 am this morning. Local trains have been affected by the accident. Railway officials claims that so far no casualties have been reported.
“Seven coaches of Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express 12290 derailed between Asangaon and Vasind railway stations. So far, no casualties have been reported,” Sunil Udasi, Chief PRO of the Central Railway, said.
He also said that the derailment was caused due to a landslide. “The cause of derailment is sudden landslide due to heavy rains. But graciously enough, the driver did an excellent job of applying emergency brakes.” Since the past four days, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Mumbai-Pune-Nashik plus Konkan have been battered by torrential rains.
Rescue teams are currently on the spot. Four trains have been diverted due to the derailment via Kalyan-Lonavala-Pune-Daund-Manmad. Five buses have also reached the spot to carry stranded passengers. A helpline booth has been provided near Deputy station superintendent’s office near Platform Number 1 at Nagpur stations.
