THE POOR AND MARGINALISED SECTIONS ARE DEPRIVED OF EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

S.B. Chetti, retired principal, SLN Engineering College, has raised concerns over the increasing commercialisation of education in India. He was delivering the inaugural address at a students’ convention on education here on Wednesday. It was organised by the All-India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO).

“Commercialisation of education is one of the major challenges that the Indian education sector is facing. Education is increasingly becoming a costly commodity that only a few affluent can afford. A majority of the poor and marginalised sections of society is being deprived of educational opportunities,” he said.

Mr. Chetti expressed dissatisfaction over the approach of most of the educational institutions that had devalued the essence of education and reduced it to mere certificate. Pramod, State secretary, AIDSO, criticised the successive governments for reducing the essence of education to technical knowledge.
