Well, everybody remembers the Valentine days and celebrities birthdays, but very few of us know that every year August 29 marks our nation’s National Sports Day. It is also the birth anniversary of the Ultimate Hockey Legend of the World, Major Dhyan Chand.
This year marked the 112th birthday of the three time Gold medalist in Olympics 1928, 1932 and 1936. In honour of Dhyan Chand, August 29 is also celebrated as National Sports Day, when various sporting honours are bestowed upon athletes from India.
Known for his sublime goal-scoring laurels and extraordinary ball control, Dhyan Chand is regarded as the greatest field hockey player of all time.
Having scored more than 400 goals during his international career, Dhyan Chand would go on to play till 1948, at which time he was 42.
One of his iconic match is the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Dhyan Chand scored 12 goals in two matches, making India win Gold again. He took the field barefoot in the second half of the final against Germany and helped India win 8-1. A third straight Hockey title at the Games was captured.
In 1956, he was awarded with ‘Padma Bhushan’ by the Indian government for his splendid contribution to Indian hockey. He continues to be in the fray for being conferred the ‘Bharat Ratna’. People haven’t forget the patriotism and dedication of Dhyan Chand and he is still the Idol figure for the aspiring Hockey players.
So let’s celebrate this year’s National Sports Day with pride, and honour our present players of Hockey and all the other games, so that they can bring more titles & medals for the nation.
