Amancio Ortega, the founder of Zara’s parent company Inditex S.A., is closing in on Bill Gates’s position as the world’s richest person. The Spanish retail tycoon briefly surpassed Gates by some million dollars on Tuesday to become the next richest man but ended the day back at the second position.

Ortega’s net worth is USD 2.2 billion behind the Microsoft Corporation co-founder Bill Gates, whose net worth is $83.3 billion. Ortega last surpassed Bill Gates to be the World’s Richest Person in October 2015, after the company’s net worth hit USD 80 billion, reaching to 33.99 euros per share.


Ortega quitted school at the age of 14 and worked in a cloth store. He started his garment business, the first Zara store with his wife in 1972. Then after he never looked back. Ortega worked on his way to become the most wealthy man in Europe. Currently, he is the wealthiest retailer in the world.

Apart from the garment business, this Spanish Businessman also has a presence in the real estate sector. In 2012, Pontegadea Inmobiliaria, his real estate business reported assets of more than 5 billion Euros.

Ortega uses to lead a low profile life as he is a believer of Simple lifestyle. Until 1999, a single photograph of him haven’t been published. He doesn’t wear a tie but a simple Blazer as his uniform. He lives in A Coruna, a city in Spain.

Ortega is the majority owner of the holding company Inditex, which also owns other clothing brands such as Stradivarius, Pull and Bear, Uterqüe, Massimo Dutti, and Oysho.
